When planting Belem hair grass, divide your portion into smaller clumps and plant these a few cm apart, Belem will send out runners and fill in the spaces creating a fantastic looking carpet.
While Belem hair grass is very hardy, you’ll find it benefits from some KH in the water, as do most plants. A KH kept somewhere between 4 – 8 is ideal for Belem. Belem will grow in a pH ranging from 5.5 – 8.0, a temperature from 18 – 30, although it can begin to struggle in some tanks a little once the temp goes over 28.
Belem Hairgrass is not only popular as a foreground plant in many aquascapes, it is also very popular for use in terrariums, vivarium’s and the like, due to its ability to grow partially emersed.
Hardiness – easy
Light needs – low to high. The plant does tend to grow a little taller in low light
Growth rate – slow ( just ask my lab manager! )
CO2 – not required, however like most plants Belem hairgrass will grow faster with good lighting, fertilization and Co2 injection.
Fertilisation – weekly basic fertilizer is recommended for almost all aquarium plants
