Relatively common, especially northern islands of the SIMP. Generally tropical Indo-Pacific from NSW to southern Japan, east Indian Ocean. Juveniles south to Montague Island in NSW. Prefers coastal reefs and shallow slopes to about 25m depth. Juveniles found in coastal protected bays and estuaries. Easily identified by the dark blue almost black colouration with the large white spot on upper middle of side. Large horizontal spine on corner of preopercle. Grows to about 15cm.
