Riccia fluitans hen left floating in your aquarium, will thrive under many varying conditions. It is not overly fussy with pH ranges, temperatures, water hardness or lighting. In fact its growth rate is often so fast that it can quickly take over the surface of the aquarium if left unchecked. Floating Riccia fluitans is an excellent source of micro bacteria and a safe haven for fry. Bubble nesting fish species, such as Betta and Gourami also enjoy building their nests around and under floating Riccia fluitans.
If you are planning to tie your Riccia fluitans to a rock or wood in your aquarium to keep it submersed, then you will find it will thank you if you keep your lighting a little higher and inject a little CO2 into your water. It will also benefit from occasional trimming, as it will always be growing and trying to float to the surface.
Hardiness – easy (medium if submersed )
Light needs – low – medium
Growth rate – fast
CO2 – not required when floating
Fertilization – not required, however a good quality basic weekly plant diet is always recommended for most aquarium plants.
